New Life For Old Weed Screen Cleaner
Many IDB’s are recognising the cost benefits of total refurbishment of their existing weedscreen cleaning machines rather than replacing them.
As weed screen cleaners get older, maintenance demands increase and effectiveness can be compromised. After 20 years or so, carriage wheels can seize up, wiring becomes brittle, gear boxes suffer damage, motors fail and many of the micro switches become obsolete.
C W Engineering offers a complete refurbishment service of their own systems and weedscreen cleaners supplied by other companies who would rather install a totally new system. Experience has indicated that the refurbishment option can save around 50% of replacement costs and double the service life of existing machinery.
The work includes the removal of the trolley and grab unit back to C W’s King’s Lynn engineering works for both quality control and convenience.
“A local engineer called to rectify a specific problem rarely sees the big picture” says project manager Dickie Dye. “Once the machinery is in the factory, our engineers know what they are looking for and of course have immediate access to all the materials and components required to complete the total refurbishment task.”
The machinery is dismantled and fully inspected. Once any detritus and debris are removed, refurbishment includes replacement of wiring, sensors, motors and gearboxes. While stripped down, the weed screen cleaner’s superstructure is checked for damage or deterioration, repaired, shot blasted and hot zinc sprayed as protection against the elements. The new system is fully tested before re-installation on site.
Not all faults can be attributed to the mechanical side, there is of course the electrical panel which controls these machines, these has also been vastly improved technically over the last 20 years. The software and hardware within these old panels frequently causes many of the breakdowns and failures which occur during the busy winter periods. Obtaining spare parts and skilled personnel to rectify these failures is becoming an ongoing problem. We, however, have the experience and knowhow to replace the entire panel with a more current version along with updates in operating sequences.
